Spring 2021
Vélo Électrique
The task:
Future transportation
The instructions for the project was to create a future-proof method of travel. We opted to build an electric bicycle. we For this project, we would try to thoroughly complete every step of the design and manufacturing process.
My Contributions
Power Transmission design
3D printing
The instructions for the project was to create a sustainable method of travel. We opted to build an electric bicycle. Instead of attempting a complicated project, we would try and thoroughly complete every step of the design and manufacturing process.
We used 3D printing extensively to prototype and iterate our designs. Although basic 3d printing isn’t typically used for functional parts, but by using bearing and washer inserts, the housing and brackets could withstand a much higher load.
Shaft and support manufacturing
Applying the different techniques I learned in the machine shop, I was able to recreate my design in tool steel
Learnings
Although our bicycle did function, it was very under-powered. We pulled many of the components from an electric scooter where the motor was joined to a gearbox and axle component. The motor was capable to spin at high speeds, but it could never reach that rpm with the weight of the batteries and a cyclist on the bike.
